Anevening of Contemporary Arabic Literature in Translation

The Chartered Institute of Linguists: Translating Division is delighted toannounce that Peter Clark, a well-known translator of contemporary Arabicnovels into English, will be introducing an evening of excerpts of contemporaryArabic writing in the original and in English translation; he will speak aboutboth the cultural context of Arabic-into-English translation and specifictechnical challenges.

The London-based Sudanese poet, Al-Saddiq al-Raddi, will then talk abouttranslating poetry, and SarahMaguire, the Director of the Poetry Translation Centre, will read hertranslations of some of Al-Saddiq’s poems. The Palestinian novelist,Selma Dabbagh, lives in Londonand writes in English: she will speak about language choices in expressing Arabconsciousness. Finally, SarahMaguire will read a short story in Arabic by the UAE writer, Muhammad al-Murr,and Peter Clark will read his own translation.

There will be ample opportunity for members of the audience to ask the speakersquestions throughout the evening, and particularly during the break.

Tea, coffee and soft drinks will be available before the evening begins andduring the break.
